Captura y Fuga

Artistic director Siudy Garrido

Choreographer and artistic director José Manuel Álvarez

About the Program

Drawing from the archive of renowned photographer René Robert, José Manuel Álvarez proposes a performative space where dance and digital art converge. This work reinterprets more than 50 years of flamenco photography in which Robert sought to capture a state of grace and the fury of living. Álvarez translates gesture into movement, embodying the photographer at the moment of the shutter's release—becoming the developing vessel and the conduit through which these artists are reconnected. Through corporeal expression, the work establishes a living dialogue between the photographed flamenco figures and the present moment.

Who's Who

José Manuel Álvarez is an acclaimed flamenco dancer, choreographer and director recognized for his innovative approach to contemporary flamenco and movement-based performance. Trained in traditional flamenco while deeply influenced by contemporary dance and physical theater, Álvarez has emerged as one of the most distinctive voices of his generation, developing a choreographic language that bridges tradition and experimentation. He has collaborated with renowned flamenco artists and companies, including Marco Flores, participating in productions such as Laberíntica (2014) and Enter the Game (2016). His artistic career has brought him to prestigious venues and festivals across Europe, including Théâtre de la Ville in Paris and the Palau de la Música in Barcelona, and to leading flamenco tablaos such as Corral de la Morería, El Cordobés, Las Carboneras, Villarrosa and Tablao de Carmen. As a creator, Álvarez directs his own company and has developed original works including Movimiento Colateral (2018), Bailes Colaterales (2019), Crosses (2020) and El Rumbòdrom (2021). His work explores the hybridization of flamenco with contemporary movement practices and other body languages, creating performances that are deeply rooted in flamenco tradition and boldly contemporary. Álvarez performs internationally as a guest artist, collaborator and creator, contributing to the evolution of flamenco on the global stage.

Siudy Garrido is an award-winning choreographer, dancer and two-time Latin Grammy nominee recognized as one of the leading flamenco artists of her generation. Praised by international media as “mesmerizing,” “first-class” and “a queen of flamenco,” she is known for blending traditional flamenco with contemporary influences to create a distinctive artistic voice. As founder and artistic director of Siudy Flamenco, she has created internationally acclaimed productions presented at prestigious venues throughout the United States, Europe and Latin America, including sold-out performances at Lincoln Center in New York and in Madrid. Her production Bailaora: Mis Pies Son Mi Voz received two Latin Grammy nominations, making history as one of the first independent flamenco stage productions to be recognized by The Latin Recording Academy.

Siudy Flamenco is the evolution of Siudy Garrido’s 24-year-old dance company, founded in Venezuela and relocated in 2015 to its new home in Miami. The flamenco company has collaborated with major artistic entities, renowned composers, musicians and artists from around the world.

The work of Garrido draws on a diverse set of deeply rooted cultural traditions, infusing classical flamenco with new expressive potential.

Siudy Flamenco’s mission is to produce and present the highest level of flamenco performances throughout Florida and the United States and abroad; train young, aspiring flamenco dancers; and develop the Siudy Flamenco Program into a leader in flamenco dance education in America.

Siudy Flamenco nurtures dynamic artistry and the development of authentic, creative expression through flamenco. We are committed to exploring the possibilities of diverse movements of dance and music from a global perspective and renewing the transcendence of traditional flamenco. As a result of the meritorious work that Siudy Flamenco has done, the company has become an arts partner with the Adrienne Arsht Center.

Siudy Flamenco has collaborated with orchestras such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, South Florida Symphony Orchestra, Des Moines Symphony, New West Symphony and Miami Symphony Orchestra, as well as with the Latin Grammys, the North Sea Jazz Festival (Curaçao), Disney and Cirque du Soleil.
