Synopsis
For more than 25 years, the Astor Piazzolla Quintet have preserved and honored the legacy of revolutionary bandoneon player and composer Astor Piazzolla. Throughout their extensive career, the Quintet have toured across the United States, Latin America, Europe, Australia and Asia, earning praise from critics and prestigious awards. They have won two Latin Grammy Awards for Best Tango Album (in 2019 and 2023).
The Quintet is composed of five virtuoso soloists with renowned careers. All are deeply committed to Piazzolla’s aesthetics and artistically shaped by his influence: Pablo Mainetti (bandoneon), Matías Feigin (piano), Serdar Geldymuradov (violin), Armando de La Vega (guitar) and Cristian Basto (double bass).
Under the musical direction of Julián Vat, the Quintet keep alive Piazzolla’s extensive body of work, preserving the essence of his transformation of tango into an original art form. On November 7, they bring that legacy to the Knight Concert Hall stage for one unforgettable night, performing their brand-new album, Le Grand Tango.
Le Grand Tango is an album that reveals the most refined, profound, and evolved side of the great Argentine composer. It includes iconic pieces such as Zita and Oblivion, along with a specially adapted version of Le Grand Tango, which unleashes its full expressive intensity in this intimate, virtuosic format. The program also features Luna, a rarely heard work, surprising in its lyricism and emotional richness, and a notable reinterpretation of the Concerto for Bandoneón and Orchestra, arranged with sensitivity and mastery for quintet. This album not only pays tribute to an immortal legacy but also reaffirms its relevance, bringing it to new audiences through a performance of remarkable craft and devotion.
