“Between Grief & Grace” grew out of a series of heartfelt conversations with Deborah and was inspired by her remarkable journey as a caregiver. We connected instantly, finding common ground in our shared love of family and the profound privilege—and challenge—of caring for aging parents. Her openness, resilience and ability to find gratitude even amid grief stayed with me long after our conversations ended. Through the symbolism of night and day, this painting reflects the space where grief and hope coexist while honoring family, heritage and the enduring power of love—reminding us that even in life's darkest moments, light continues to guide us forward. The flower (lily) representing her father's homeland covers the eye associated with memory and reflection. It's like Italy and her father remain part of how Deborah sees the world, even if that vision is now inward rather than outward. Her mother's tulips aren't in her hair or hands. They're wrapped around her shoulders suggesting comfort, protection and the embrace of a living relationship that continues to grow and thrive. Deborah unites two separate worlds in this composition. Her face is centered between night and day, and she isn't pulled apart by them—she contains them. This is a metaphor for Deborah, who is still grieving and still healing while choosing gratitude and joy. More than inspiring this piece, Deborah's story reminded me that even in grief, love has the power to transform us.
