Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County presents

Quinteto Astor Piazzolla

Le Grand Tango

Astor Piazzolla's Le Grand Tango is at the center of this show's program, which brings together some of the composer's most essential works and offers a renewed vision of his legacy that is intense, refined and strikingly contemporary. The program unfolds through a series of vivid contrasts: the driving energy of "Presto" (the third movement of the Concerto for Bandoneon and Orchestra, here arranged for quintet); the sharp virtuosity of "Escualo"; the introspective world of "Soledad" and "Oblivion"; and the delicate lyricism of the rarely performed "Luna," alongside iconic pieces such as "Zita," "Milonga loca" and "Verano porteño."

Quinteto Astor Piazzolla

For more than 25 years, Astor Piazzolla Quintet have preserved and honored the legacy of revolutionary bandoneon player and composer Astor Piazzolla. Throughout their extensive career, the Quintet have toured across the United States, Latin America, Europe, Australia and Asia, earning unanimous praise from critics and numerous prestigious awards. Among their most notable achievements are two Latin Grammy Awards for Best Tango Album (2019 and 2023), further raising their reputation and prestige on the global stage.

The group is composed of five virtuoso soloists with renowned careers, all deeply committed to Piazzolla’s aesthetics and artistically shaped under his direct influence: Pablo Mainetti (bandoneon), Matías Feigin (piano), Serdar Geldymuradov (violin), Armando de La Vega (guitar) and Cristian Basto (double bass). Under the musical direction of Julián Vat, the Quintet keep alive Piazzolla’s extensive body of work, preserving the essence of his transformation of tango into a unique art form.

In 1960, Piazzolla formed his original Quintet, choosing the bandoneon, violin, electric guitar, piano and double bass as the key instruments. This lineup played a vital role in the development of Nuevo Tango, a genre he pioneered throughout that decade, leaving a lasting impact on the history of world music.

The musicians who accompanied Piazzolla were exceptional performers, valued by the maestro for their ability to reinterpret and enrich his music with their own styles and personalities. During the 1970s, Piazzolla’s move to Europe led to the Quintet’s temporary suspension. The Quintet reunited in 1978 with new musicians who accompanyied him for the next 10 years. This period marked Piazzolla’s rise to international fame, with a repertoire blending the Nuevo Tango of the 1960s with innovative new compositions that gave birth to authentic masterpieces.

In recent years, Astor Piazzolla Quintet have released five albums and a series of singles, not only celebrating the composer’s vast legacy but also recovering and revaluing some of his lesser-known compositions. Their albums include Revolucionario, Fugata, En 3x4, Triunfal and Operation Tango.

To honor and celebrate the work of this musical genius, Astor Piazzolla Quintet offer an experience that pays tribute to his expansive creative universe. In concert, the Quintet combine and contrast Piazzolla's academic works with his popular repertoire, highlighting different moments of creativity, intensity and passion. Their music connects the past with the present, preserving the essence of a musical genius.
