Twist on Cancer: Five years ago, I was diagnosed with NUT Carcinoma, an aggressive cancer with a short-term prognosis. I’m not in remission, but thanks to an ongoing compassionate-use drug program and a village of family, friends, medical and pharmaceutical support, I am stable. A rare outcome for which I am so grateful.
My cancer journey has been a roller coaster with scary, good, not-so-bad, bad and really good moments. I’ve spent years healing and focused on raising awareness with the hope to help progress science, which is gratifying but also a constant reminder of my diagnosis. When I was invited to join Twist on Cancer, I was hesitant. I didn't want to be the focus of attention again. My psychologist was right to encourage me.
The program gave me a profound gift before I ever saw the art. My artist, Daniel Acero, and I didn’t dwell on hardship or science. We explored my love for travel, my past as an aspiring artist and colorful spiritual memories. This process became the ultimate "twist": It took the focus off the last five years and placed my cancer journey into the context of my entire life—everything that came before and everything I still hope is to come. It taught me that while cancer is part of my story, it doesn't get to be the only chapter.

Artist Statement: Working with David has been a truly special and meaningful experience. His story reminded me that inspiration doesn’t come from things being perfect—it comes from being honest and open.
We had great conversations about his life, the good times and the hard ones. He talked about how much his life had changed and how he learned to face those changes. What inspired me most was his attitude—he was always smiling, always ready with a joke and always trying to make others feel good.
This painting isn’t just a portrait—it’s a way to honor who David is. I wanted to show a moment of happiness that truly reflected his personality. I’m so thankful to have shared this part of his journey and hope this artwork shows the strength, kindness, and joy he brought into the world.
