Twist on Cancer: Getting a cancer diagnosis changes everything, shifts your perspective, and turns your world upside down in an instant. In my case, I was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer following my regular annual mammogram. I was determined to treat my cancer as aggressively as I needed to with optimism and a determination to do what needed to be done while trusting that I would be here to see my beautiful daughter grow up. I learned that it is OK to ask for help, and I feel so lucky to have a wonderful community of friends and family who were there to support me during treatment.

Adjusting to life after treatment can be a difficult time for survivors, and it is important to find a supportive community that understands what you have been through. I am grateful to have found that community through the Save our Sisters “SOS” breast-cancer-survivor dragon boat team here in Miami. We are literally all in the same boat, and the team has been such an important part of my recovery. My advice for those newly diagnosed is to think positively, have hope as there are many new treatments available, find a medical team you are comfortable with and advocate for yourself.

It was fantastic to meet Omilani and share my story with her as part of this program. She has such a joyful presence that comes through in her colorful artwork.

Artist Statement: Some stories call for celebration. Upon meeting my inspiration, Jenny, a marine biologist and breast cancer survivor, there was no doubt in my mind what I wanted to paint. I was moved by her quiet strength and the fierce unconditional love for her daughter, as well as her passion for dragon boat racing. Her story was so inspiring, and I loved that they are a ray of sunshine in her life. This is why there was no need for an actual sun in the painting. What Jenny holds close is what shines bright. The pink dragon boat is personified as hope on her race to victory. There are pink ribbons lining the boat and subtle touches of pink in the painting in support of breast cancer awareness. The Miami skyline glows behind them, alive with the sea of possibility. She and her daughter are also mermaids, a signature from me.

In each corner are designs that seem abstract but are actually Vinta boat sails that represent my ancestral culture in Zamboanga, Philippines. They frame the scene as a symbol of resilience, protection and the shared oceans that connect us all. This art piece is called "Row With Me," symbolically representing never being alone. It is my way of saying I am here with you, and you are here with me.  It is my hope that this piece brings joy and a smile, but most of all, hope and healing vibes.
