Twist on Cancer: Sharing my story with Brushes With Cancer artists and inspirations—and anyone who will listen—is a rewarding activity. Each time I relate my experiences, I feel a little bit better and a little bit better and a little bit better. And each time the cancer gets farther and farther away and seems smaller and smaller. That's what makes Brushes With Cancer such a powerful program. Not only does it bring art into the world, but also everyone benefits from the process: the artist, the inspiration and anyone who looks at the art and reads the story behind it. Brushes With Cancer is an act of healing.

Artist Statement: Creating for Kenny was truly an honor to get to know him and how his creativity works. It was a profoundly human exchange. Listening to his journey through lymphoma, the loss of cognitive function and his eventual rediscovery of self through creative expression reminded me of what resilience truly looks like. Kenny’s story is one of transformation: from writer to visual artist, from survivor to conqueror.

This work draws inspiration from the first poem he ever wrote, an emotional recollection of moving to Chicago while still tethered to the lakes, quiet moments and reflective spaces of Wisconsin. That duality became the foundation for the piece. The left side carries the past: calm, nostalgic, steeped in gentle colors and still waters. The right side embodies the present: bold, defiant, textured with the weight of scars and the fire of survival. Here, Kenny’s rage, healing and pride converge into a crown—a symbol of triumph forged from pain.

For me, “Lapins, the Conqueror” is not simply about enduring hardship. It’s about the alchemy of pain into language, and language into a world reshaped by one’s own hands. Creativity has become both Kenny’s refuge and his revolution, offering a space where vulnerability and power coexist. This portrait does not seek to define him entirely—no single piece could—but it offers a glimpse into his evolving spirit. It is a visual poem, a testament to the way one can rise again and again, moving through softness, strength and fire toward an ever-brighter horizon.
