Program Responsibilities
The Arsht Technical Theater apprentice receives structured, hands-on training while working alongside industry-leading technicians, designers and production supervisors at one of the nation’s premier performing arts centers. The apprentice gains real-world experience in a wide range of large-scale productions, including Broadway national tours, live concerts, contemporary dance and more at the Arsht. No experience is required. This is a three-year paid program with benefits.

The Arsht Technical Theater apprentice is expected to learn:

  • Lighting systems
  • Audio engineering
  • Stage carpentry
  • Rigging
  • Video and projections
  • Wardrobe and costume support
  • Stage management and backstage operations
  • Production management


In addition to technical training, apprentices attend required life and career development workshops, such as:

  • Financial literacy
  • Health and wellness
  • Résumé and portfolio building
  • Professional communication
  • Career planning and advancement strategies

The Apprenticeship’s physical demands are:

  • While performing the duties of this position, the apprentice is frequently required to stop, reach, stand, walk, lift, pull, push, grasp, communicate and use repetitive motions.
  • While performing the duties of this position, the apprentice may frequently lift and or move 20 pounds of materials.
  • While performing the duties of this position, the apprentice may be operating from high elevations, tight spaces or poorly lit areas.
  • Must be available nights, weekends and select holidays


Upon completing the three-year program, apprentices will have behind-the-scenes knowledge and firsthand experience with building successful events on- and off-stage. The Technical Theater Apprenticeship Program alumni become:

  • Set designers
  • Costume designers
  • Prop designers
  • Carpenters
  • Electrical engineers
