A LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE: CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF THE MARSHALL L. DAVIS, SR. AFRICAN HERITAGE CULTURAL ARTS CENTER
Join us for an unforgettable evening celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Marshall L. Davis Sr. African Heritage Cultural Arts Center (DAHCAC). The Center, located in Miami-Dade County, is an after-school arts program at a college-preparatory level. Most students attend five to six days a week for four to five hours per day year round. Many children participate for 10 or more years. The Center is a cornerstone of artistic excellence in the heart of the Liberty City community.
The September 14 celebration will feature a private preview of scenes from an upcoming documentary feature film titled An Instrumental Start: A Model for the Nation, a stirring story that traces the Center’s extraordinary five-decade impact. The film is led by visionary educator Marshall L. Davis Sr. and highlights the Center’s groundbreaking after-school program, which has transformed the lives of so many.
The film is told through the voices of alumni, educators and students, including former Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater artistic director Robert Battle, world-renowned tap dancers Savion Glover and Marshall Davis Jr., Academy Award winner Tarell Alvin McCraney, professional dancers Tyrell Rolle and Naderah Munajj, professor Iya lfanike Batts, journalist Bea Hines, artist extraordinaire Sandra Julien and actress-director Phylicia Rashad, among others.
Following the screening, there will be dynamic performances by Battle, Davis Jr. and prominent jazz musician Willerm Delisfort, with a special appearance by actress Jo Marie Payton. Nu Deco Ensemble will open and close the evening with their unbelievable energy.
This is a must-see event for all who believe in the power of the arts to inspire, uplift, transform and unite communities. Celebrate the legacy. Witness the impact.
