What is hot music? Beethoven? Chucho Valdés? Beyoncé?

Join us for Dranoff2 Piano’s classical, hip-hop and spoken word mash-up featuring Miami's top teen poets. Students are invited to write poetry about life experiences or live classical music they heard in school for a countywide writing competition. PIANO SLAM finalists will perform with a string quartet of international classical musicians, Piano Duo Spektra, Miami's hottest dance band Afrobeta and professional poet Arsimmer McCoy.

The PIANO SLAM 2023 music and writing theme is “Hot Music. Hot Miami.” Teens will write about the music that makes them cool in their increasingly hot hometown.

PIANO SLAM’s teen poets are the best of the best, having won a year-long music and creative writing competition with thousands of students in Miami-Dade County Public Schools. The Miami Herald has recommended PIANO SLAM as a hip musical showcase for young Miami poets in an extraordinary collaboration of international artists.

Admission to PIANO SLAM 2023 is free. However, first-access passes are required. Get your first-access passes now!

Please note: First-access passes expire 15 minutes prior to the performance. First-access passes must be obtained for every member of your party regardless of age. There is a limit of six passes per household. Guests will be seated on a first-come, first-served basis.

"Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ work with the Dranoff Foundation and Carlene Sawyer’s team at Piano Slam aimed to include science in the student created poems. We were thrilled when our teachers received ongoing support from her team on how to incorporate science, music and the poem writing process. It was a huge success as evident by the student performances in Piano Slam. Our partnership has now grown to incorporate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) with the arts to ensure Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) and Piano Slam provides students with robust STEAM experiences."

- Mr. Cristian Carranza, Administrative Director STEM Division of Academics, Accountability and School Improvement of Miami-Dade County Public Schools

"I would like to thank each and every one for their time and teaching of us students. The time and effort that I put into Piano Slam was a bit nerve racking at the beginning. However, by the time the actual performance happened I was excited to be on stage at the Arsht for family, friends, and the huge audience. Thank you for an opportunity for me to find my voice I did not know I had it."

- Jean Paul Alonso | Leisure City K-8 Center

"Piano Slam has impacted my life as an artist. My mind was open to coaches who dove in and planted seeds of knowledge in my mind. I learned a bit more and advanced my knowledge of performing. I was blessed with an Opportunity to perform on a magnificent stage at the Arsht. The fusion of grand pianos and turntables along with b-boys and the New World dancers was very invigorating.. It showed me taking risks could bloom spectacular results. Piano Slam overall opened my mind and soul and aided the growth of a young Spoken Word artist and a young man."

- Giovanni Garced | North Miami Senior High
