Birds of Paradise Afterglow

Dance exists in every body. So what's your dance? How about we discover it together? Guided by artists of the Pioneer Winter Collective, this workshop examines the creative process that built their Arsht Center-commissioned dance-theater piece Birds of Paradise. Birds of Paradise is about celebrating the human spirit, rebirth and transformation. After viewing excerpts from the project, workshop participants will be guided in creating their own solo "dance portraits" using imagery, discussion, writing/movement prompts and lived experience. No prior dance experience is needed! Dress comfortably in breathable clothing you can dance (and sweat!) in.

About Birds of Paradise:
While in residence at the Arsht Center, Pioneer Winter Collective created Birds of Paradise to honor and celebrate the enduring nature of queer and marginalized people to shape themselves into something that is desirable, vulnerable, fierce and reborn. In its world premiere, Miami-based choreographer Pioneer Winter explored beauty and virtuosity outside the mainstream by creating a series of dance-based, queer solo portraits on the themes of agency, survival and transformation.
