A Musical Valentine: Detroit Symphony Orchestra

KNIGHT CONCERT HALL [View Seat Map]
Sunday, February 14, 2010, 4pm

The perfect outing on Valentine's Day!
Treat your Valentine to one of the most romantic symphonies ever written—Rachmaninoff’s No. 2—complemented by a luscious brunch or dinner before or after the concert in the Center’s delightful new restaurant, Prelude by Barton G.
The brilliant American conductor Leonard Slatkin began his appointment as the 12th music director of the acclaimed, nearly 100-year-old Detroit Symphony Orchestra last season, and it was love-at-first-sight among conductor, the musicians, his new home-town audience, and the local press: “The prize of the night was the chemistry between the orchestra and its new maestro, and when the rollicking performance was over, all of the audience—not just half—stood up to reward Slatkin and his charges with a raucous standing ovation” (Detroit Free Press).

Playing Samuel Barber’s richly dramatic cello concerto, the soloist for this performance is the Sol Gabetta, an exciting young artist with a French-Russian-Argentinian heritage and a Tchaikovsky Competition-winning career on the verge of international stardom.

Program notes for the February 14 performance.

The DSO Florida Tour is made possible in part by a grant from the Marjorie S. Fisher Fund and sponsorship by The Forbes Company.

This performance generously sponsored by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
