In the 1970s, jazz underwent a dramatic upheaval as the popularity of rock and funk began to influence jazz groups like Weather Report, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Headhunters and Return To Forever. Fusion masters Chick Corea and John McLaughlin along with an all-star band featuring Kenny Garrett, Christian McBride and Brian Blade light up the Miami concert stage.

Knight Foundation; Carl and Toni Randolph Charitable Fund at Dade Community Foundation; Ruth and Richard Shack Family Fund at Dade Community Foundation; and the individual support of William Kleh, Larry Rosen, and Henry Smek. The Jazz Roots education program is also funded in part by The Children’s Trust. The Trust is a dedicated source of revenue established by voter referendum to improve the lives of children and families in Miami-Dade County.
