Miami City Ballet presents Program I

ZIFF BALLET OPERA HOUSE [View Seat Map]

Friday, October 19, 2012, 8pm

Les Patineurs (The Skating Party) (Ashton/Meyerbeer)
The enchanting Les Patineurs will be seen on Miami City Ballet stages for the first time since its Company Premiere nearly 12 years ago.  Renowned choreographer Sir Frederick Ashton shows how dance can imitate the art of ice skating – as dancers glide and whirl, and even take a few tumbles! This smooth-as-ice ballet, with its entrancing score and costumes, is an audience charmer.

Piazzolla Caldera (Taylor/Piazzolla)
In this steamy, tango- flavored spectacular, Paul Taylor captures the essence of that dance’s culture.  In a dimly-lit dive (reminiscent of the brothels of Buenos Aires at the turn of the 20th century), working-class men and women confront each other in sizzling sexual duets and trios. The highly-acclaimed Piazzolla Caldera captivates audiences with its sultry, seductive moves and explosive and thrilling music.

Apollo (Balanchine/Stravinsky)
Apollo, Balanchine’s first great masterwork, literally transformed the art of 20th century ballet. With its neoclassical approach to dance, this narrative ballet follows the young god of music, beauty and light, who is approached by three muses: Calliope, Polyhymnia and Terpsichore, the muse of dance. These beautiful female essences inspire and direct his energy, as they dance to Stravinsky’s supremely elegant score.
