Renowned for its distinctive sound and admired for an unrivaled legacy of "firsts" in music-making, The Philadelphia Orchestra remains one of the preeminent orchestras in the world. The Orchestra has long pushed the boundaries of convention in the classical music realm. Signature to such a reputation are world and American premieres of such important works as Mahler's Symphony No. 8 (Symphony of a Thousand), Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, and Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances.

Since 1900, the Orchestra has cultivated an extraordinary history of artistic leaders, including music directors Leopold Stokowski, Eugene Ormandy, Riccardo Muti, and its current chief conductor, Charles Dutoit. Yannick Nézet-Séguin joins this illustrious group in the 2012-13 season, serving as the Orchestra's eighth music director.

The eminent Spanish conductor emeritus of the National Orchestra of Spain, Rafael Frühbeck De Burgos, who has enjoyed a long artistic relationship with the Orchestra, will lead the ensemble as guest conductor for its Arsht Center engagement.

The program features the internationally acclaimed American pianist André Watts, who has a long history of music making with The Philadelphia Orchestra, beginning with his official debut with the Orchestra at age 14. Just two years later, he came to nationwide attention when he was chosen by Leonard Bernstein to make his debut with the New York Philharmonic during one of the orchestra's famed Young People's concerts. Only two weeks later, Bernstein asked him to substitute at the last minute for the ailing Glenn Gould in performances of Liszt's E-flat Concerto with the New York Philharmonic, which launched his illustrious career. More than 45 years later, André Watts remains one of today's most celebrated and beloved artists. He received the coveted Avery Fisher Prize in 1988 and a National Medal of Arts in 2011, given by the President of the United States.
