10 COMMISSIONED PIECES IN CELEBRATION OF THE CENTER’S 10TH ANNIVERSARY!
Commissions Highlight Center’s Commitment to Innovative Programming, Miami Roots and Signature Events
The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County unveiled a series of 10 commissions, known as “10@10,” that will be presented during the Center’s 10th anniversary season. Encompassing both the performing and visual arts, the commissions will be original pieces from longtime Arsht Center collaborators, highlighting the rich cultural relationships the Center has fostered over the last 10 years and the Center’s commitment to commissioning new work. Additionally, an education or community engagement component will be incorporated into each new work to support the Center’s mission of making the performing arts accessible to all.
The ten commissions include:
Miami-native Robert Battle, artistic director of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, will develop a new piece of choreography titled “The Attention of Souls,” which marks the first piece he will create for the company since becoming artistic director. Performing Arts Center (PACT) Board of Directors Treasurer, Ira D. Hall, and his wife, Carole Hall, have stepped forward as lead sponsors of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater commission. The Miami premiere of “The Attention of Souls” will take place in 2016.
Famed Israeli-born composer Avner Dorman will create a new work commissioned by the Arsht Center for The Cleveland Orchestra. The Orchestra will give the world premiere performance under the baton of Giancarlo Guerrero in March 2016. The piece, a program opener, will celebrate the diverse influences that comprise Miami’s musical landscape.

In Oh Vida! - Rubalcaba & Fernández pay tribute to legendary Cuban big bandleader Beny Moré, “El Bárbaro del Ritmo.” Moré’s many unforgettable hits include “Que Bueno Baila Usted” and “Como Fué.” At this performance, a zesty flamenco twist will be added to his work when Grammy-winning Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Spanish singer Esperanza Fernández join forces to present a new take on a set of classic songs.
The world premiere of a new concert from the Arsht Center’s signature series, Jazz Roots, will be produced by Larry Rosen in tribute to one of the pioneers of the music industry.
Haitian dance company Ayikodans, who found a home at the Arsht Center following the devastating 2010 earthquake, will present a world premiere piece inspired by the Center’s ongoing alliance with the company and to be performed in February 2016.
Encompassing three commissions, The House Theatre of Chicago will present The Hammer Trinity, a trilogy of plays inspired by the mythology of King Arthur. The three plays will be performed in weekday repertory as well as weekend marathon performances.

Extending the Center’s flagship arts education program, Learning Through the Arts, a new theatrical work will be created that will highlight innovation throughout American History. Once completed, the musical will be performed, for free, for all 7th grade Miami-Dade County Public Schools students.
10@10 will be one of the largest number of commissions to be completed all in the same year by a performing arts center less than a decade old.
