High comedy and adventure combine in this rock musical from Emmy-winning composer Billy Straus and Kleban Award-winning writer Stephen Cole, with direction by three-time Parent's Choice award winner Douglas Love. Follow our hero, Odysseus, as he fights his way home to reunite with his wife and son. Beautiful stagecraft, special effects and a rockin' Miami-based cast pump up the volume on this original spin on Homer's epic poem.
Much more than a play or field trip, Rock Odyssey is accompanied by lesson plans tied to Florida's Sunshine State Standards that help teachers use the theater experience as a springboard for classroom lessons. With generous support from community-minded companies, foundations, individuals and our state and county elected officials, the Arsht Center provides free transportation and admission so all fifth-graders in Miami-Dade County Public Schools can benefit from Rock Odyssey. More than 61,000 fifth-graders have been touched by this program in the past three seasons.
In partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Rock Odyssey is the first installment in the Arsht Center's ambitious Learning Through the Arts live theater education initiative that aims to ultimately touch the lives of students in our school system in fifth, seventh and ninth grades - pivotal years when it comes to dropout prevention.
Learning Through the Arts is part of the multi-faceted Arts Education and Community Engagement effort at the Arsht Center, where we're making the transformational power of the arts accessible to a new generation.
