“The Ailey dancers are sleek, athletic masters of the universe!”
- The New York Times
“The irresistible dancers of Ailey are back” (The New Yorker) after a two-year absence with a dazzling array of offerings including a world premiere by Miami native, Artistic Director Robert Battle, co-commissioned by the Adrienne Arsht Center’s 10@10 series. Battle uses his taut, ritualistic style to powerful effect in this dance that expertly balances chaos and resolution, dissonance and harmony. Awakening*, his first new work since becoming artistic director in 2011, is set to a symphonic score by frequent collaborator John Mackey. The Company’s all-star lineup will also include new works by some of today’s most acclaimed choreographers, as well as Ailey classics including the perennial crowd-pleaser Revelations, which will close every performance.
Choose from three programs:
Thursday Evening (2/18), Saturday Matinee (2/20), and Sunday Matinee (2/21) include the premieres of Mr. Battle’s Awakening, Judith Jamison’s sultry duet A Case of You, and Ronald K. Brown’s Afro Latin-inspired Open Door.
Friday Evening (2/19) includes Rennie Harris’ electrifying Exodus, Paul Taylor’s sizzling take on the tango in Piazzolla Caldera, and Christopher Wheeldon’s dream-like After the Rain Pas de Deux.
Saturday Evening (2/20) also features Exodus, plus Robert Battle’s searing No Longer Silent, inspired by a long-forgotten score by Erwin Schulhoff, a Jewish composer banned in Nazi Germany.
Mr. Ailey’s beloved masterpiece Revelations will close each performance.
