    JAZZ ROOTS: Joshua Redman Quartet

Grammy-nominated saxophone master Joshua Redman is renowned for his sound and his boundless creativity. In this highly-anticipated performance, Joshua performs with the legendary quartet featured on his seminal 2000 recording, Beyond. Released when Josh was just 30, Beyond and its follow-up release, Passage of Time, signaled a new level of creativity and emotional depth for this amazing virtuoso and his bandmates. In the nearly 20 years since then, Josh has deepened his musical relationship with all of these colleagues, collectively and individually. With bassist Reuben Rodgers and drummer Gregory Hutchinson, Josh established a new frontier of performance that has honed their already supple intuition to extraordinary levels of group interplay, resulting in Grammy-nominated recordings such as Back EastCompass, and Trios Live.

JAZZ ROOTS: Jazz in the Key of Ellison

JAZZ IN THE KEY OF ELLISON is a new concert production inspired by the musical life of America’s iconic writer Ralph Ellison, presented in music, words, and images. Ralph Ellison, acclaimed author of the National Book Award-winning novel Invisible Man, was an accomplished trumpeter who was close to many of the great jazz innovators of his lifetime – from Armstrong and Ellington to Bird and Monk. The concert celebration premiered in November 2016 at New Jersey Performing Arts Center.

    JAZZ ROOTS: R+R=NOW

In an era when every headline carries some new horror or fresh worry, we need music that can clap back with immediacy, skill, and heart. We need a band so at home in its skin that it can play without ego and lead with love—artists whose very existence attests to resilience and hope. We need R+R=NOW, a supergroup assembled by Robert Glasper but functionally egalitarian, in no small part because its members are visionary players, composers, and producers on their own: Glasper on keys, Terrace Martin on synthesizer and vocoder, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah on trumpet, Derrick Hodge on bass, Taylor McFerrin on synth and beatbox, and newcomer Justin Tyson on drums. You could try to count up the GRAMMYs between them but you'd be missing the point. This genre-mashing outfit moves as one and, as their name reveals, with great purpose.

JAZZ ROOTS: From Brazil with Love: Sergio Mendes

Producer, composer, keyboardist and vocalist, Sergio Mendes is one of the most internationally successful Brazilian artists of all time. His hit single, "Mas Que Nada," is the first Portuguese language song to ever hit Billboard's U.S. Pop chart and Mendes' signature mix of bossa nova and samba and distinctive pop instrumentation have ultimately come to define Brazilian music.
