STRAVINSKY The Rite of Spring
The South Florida Symphony Orchestra welcomes the legendary Martha Graham Dance Company in a historic collaboration performing Copland’s Appalachian Spring, Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring and premiering Tom Hormel’s Legend of Bird Mountain. All performances are choreographed by Martha Graham and Virginie Mécène.
Choreographer Virginie Mécène has been commissioned to create a new dance to music by composer Tom Hormel. The eclectic, colorful music of Hormel reminded Mécène of the cultural diversity of New York City, and she was inspired to create a work that weaves together stories of people in the Big City. She chose a young woman as the protagonist and a cast of twelve dancers who play multiple characters. Mécène has explored themes of displacement, culture shock, diversity, loneliness, as well as love, togetherness and community, to create her dance, A New Place.
