With his skilled and well-traveled five-piece Zydeco Experience group, two-time Grammy award winning Terrance Simien offers up a dynamic performance that will take you to places you’ve never been before! He’ll take you on a memorable cultural journey to the rural prairies and bayous of South Louisiana where zydeco music was born to the mixed race, French speaking Creoles of African, French, German, Spanish and Native American heritage.
Simien has introduced audiences all over the globe to his colorful Creole cultural identity through his original song lyrics and engaging onstage narrative. The audiences learn a few Creole French words and phrases. They become better informed about the rich culinary traditions of the Creoles and learn the origin of gumbo. Featured on Disney’s “Princess & the Frog” animated movie set in New Orleans, Simien performs “Gonna Take You There” from the film soundtrack and a song he collaborated on with Randy Newman.
Originally created in 2001 to help his own Louisiana Creole community assume more ownership and a greater sense of pride of their own culture, like Cajun community did as far back as the 1970's - in public schools, tourism and arts programming - while neglecting the marginalized people of color, the Creoles who created zydeco!
Two-time Grammy award winning Simien is a highly respected, well informed and articulate teaching artist who has lectured at some of the most notable universities and private colleges in the US, including Berklee College of Music Boston in partnership with their American Roots and Afrikan studies departments. Some experts have even compared Simien's performance acumen to stealth education - a way of learning a subject through unconventional means like the performing arts! Since it was established, this program has now reached over 350,000 students, parents and teachers worldwide.
